We were grateful that the snow cooperated so that everyone could attend the retreat we sponsored in a location outside of Ann Arbor. As educators, parents and school supporters, we felt the symbolic significance of being together in community at Southfield High School. Thanks to Paula Lightsey for arranging this space.
MC4ME provided an 8-week mindfulness skills training for educators sponsored by the Michigan Education Association and its affiliate partner, the Ann Arbor Education Association. The program was a great success. Whether participants were new to the district or had 30 years of experience, all remarked on its pervasive impact on their personal and professional lives.
As Grahm Hannah, a high school teacher reflected: I really valued this class. It was the most important thing that I could have done to improve my skills coming into the district. Working 15-hour days is stressful. I sleep better, respond more thoughtfully and effectively, and am able to self-soothe back into a mental state fit for teaching students.
