2019 Report
We are very excited about what we accomplished this past year. We provided mindfulness training to youth in foster care as well as to staff in organizations that worked specifically with youth. We nurtured a partnership with the Michigan Education Association that resulted in sponsorship of a 22-hour mindfulness based training program to educators from the Ann Arbor School District. We also implemented a similar training program in a very low income k-8 school in Toledo, Ohio and to educators across the Troy school district. Irrespective of role – classroom teacher, counselor, social worker, teaching assistant or special education consultant – all these educators extolled the value of learning mindfulness. Each remarked they now had tools to help them better meet the demands of teaching. Mindfulness helped them sleep better, feel less stressed and be more responsive and effective in meeting the needs of their students.
In addition to this comprehensive training program, we also offered day long Institutes and half-day workshops at various professional conferences and schools located in Ann Arbor, Lansing, Southfield, Detroit and Traverse City. This past summer we provided a specialized 2-day practice-based training to help educators learn how to apply mindfulness in their classrooms. These educators reported that this was best training they ever experienced.
We also provided different opportunities for educators, parents and clinical professionals to gather as a community, from formal retreats to informal meet-ups. We sparked and participated in collaborations, one of which resulted in a week-long residential mindfulness retreat for high school seniors in Kalamazoo. A few of these youth shared their experience in our fall meet-up: the transformative impact of mindfulness in their lives was so inspiring.
