When staff is trained in mindfulness practice and provide their lesson plans in a mindful, trauma sensitive and responsive style, students are better able to connect to their teachers and engage in behaviorally appropriate ways that facilitates academic learning. Teaching mindfulness to students in the classroom allows student to acquire tools to better understand themselves, and cope with their stress more effectively. The school is an ideal environment in which to learn and practice mindfulness. Students encounter repeated opportunity to reinforce their skills during everyday instruction and interaction. Training in mindfulness provides the core foundation for addressing and cultivating social emotional learning skills and a trauma sensitive learning environment. This whole school mindfulness training program involves a 6 month training commitment from the school and between 35-50 hours of educator training time.
