Our children and schools face enormous challenge in Michigan today.
Anxiety and suicide in teens are reported to be at record highs. The opioid and addiction crisis abounds. Families are struggling to meet economic needs and stay together. The political divide, racial and social justice issues, and current pandemic crisis facing our country has added increased stress to our world, affecting our educator’s capacity to teach effectively, our student’s capacity to learn and our overall quality of interpersonal connection.
The stakes for educating our children have never been higher. The future of our children’s worlds will require navigating constant change, increasing complexity and uncertainty. In these times, supporting mindfulness training in education is more important than ever.
Effective schools require educators who are inspirational in engaging their students to reach their potential and be their best selves. To do this, educators must feel valued for their work, experience stability in their own personal and professional lives, and demonstrate compassion and positive responsiveness for the students. Mindfulness training offers the foundation for growth in personal and professional self-awareness that can lead to culturally responsive and safe classrooms where students can thrive academically and socially.
Mindfulness is a natural human capacity to pay attention to experience as it is happening. Training in mindfulness practice provides for life long skills that enable teachers, parents and children to respond to situations with greater emotional balance and perspective; to keep their center when feeling overwhelmed, and discover their inner resources to give them strength, focus and joy. There is now a substantial body of research into the effects of mindfulness across different populations and settings which shows compelling evidence that cultivating mindfulness practice improves physical health and social and emotional well-being.
We offer a variety of training programs for this purpose, and are adapting these for virtual access during these times. We rely primarily on philanthropy to support our programming. Any financial contribution you make, no matter how big or small, will support our efforts to provide students and schools with programs in mindfulness.
For each every classroom teacher trained and who practices mindfulness, 30-150 students per year receive the benefit. If one elementary school trains 12 teachers, the ripple effects reach 350 students, and for a middle or high school, the impact is even higher, up to 2000 students.
Thank you for considering a donation to the Michigan Center for Mindfulness in Education. Your support really will make a difference to Michigan teachers and students.
